Topical probiotics

  • By Trulux Team

Probiotics have long been associated with good gut flora, however topical probiotics are now trending in personal care lines.

Probiotics, aka friendly bacteria, are live bacterial cultures found in live microbial food supplements and fermented foods, such as yoghurt. Yogurt is recognised around the world for its health benefits owing to its probiotics ABC cultures. When ingested these non-pathogenic micro-organisms help fight illness and disease, and may significantly improve a person’s health.

Topical probiotics are now trending in both skin and hair care product lines. This friendly bacteria can influence the makeup of the skin’s microflora to treat skin complaints and promote younger and healthier-looking skin.

Probiotics produce acidic compounds, such as lactic acid, that reduce the skin’s pH. This discourages pathogens, favouring the growth of resident flora.

Probiotics in personal care is capable of speeding skin repair by enhancing cellular renewal, increasing collagen production to improve texture, as well as reducing inflammation and redness, and decreasing skin sensitivity.

Combined with an increase in exfoliation and hydration, probiotics minimise the appearance of wrinkles for additional anti-aging results and is suitable for sensitive and dry skin.

Topical probiotics have also been used to treat acne, and may even become an alternative to topical antibiotics for treating the skin condition.

Benefits of probiotics in personal care

  • improves the ratio of good bacteria versus pathogenic (bad) bacteria
  • regulates skin balance
  • improves moisturisation and barrier function
  • reduces water loss
  • increased rate of exfoliation
  • reduces inflammation and redness
  • decreases skin sensitivity
  • can be used in the treatment of acne
